€ 650
Incredibly rare enlarged second edition of the Dutch translation of a popular book on the art of letter-writing, giving hundreds of examples of letters for use in all sorts of occasions. The original French edition was written by Jean Puget de La Serre (1594-1669) and first published as Le secrétaire à la mode by the Elzeviers in 1641. Both the original French edition and the Dutch translation proved to be very popular and they were often reprinted until the middle of the 18th-century. Nevertheless, surviving copies prove to be quite rare, of the present work the STCN only notes 1 other copy (in Leiden) and WorldCat adds only one other (Hendrik Conscience Erfgoedbibliotheek in Antwerp).
With the small bookplate of J.W. Six and a larger coat-of-arms-ex libris plate on the front pastedown, with some occasional minor stains and a very light water stain in the top margin of the first few leaves. Otherwise a fine copy of an extremely rare work, from the library of J.W. Six. De Vries 507; Muller 459; STCN 88000536X (1 copy); WorldCat 901214492, 1371819335 (2 copies); cf. Waller 1007 (1658 ed.); for the French ed. Willems 976; not in NUC.
