Second edition of this first national pharmacopoeia published in Spain. The first edition had appeared in 1739, printed by the Typographia Regia, by Michaelis Rodriquez. It is the official text imposed by the State to be followed by doctors and pharmacists as a guide on the prescription and preparation of drugs, such as it was stated in the Royal Decree of Protomedicato approved by King Philip V of Spain in the original edition. This second edition shows only a few variations from the prince edition.
The title of Pharmacopoeia Matritensis did not limit the territorial scope of its application, the choice of the term matritensis is also due to a clearly centralized attitude of the new ruling elite to the ancient custom of naming the pharmacopoeia with the adjective of the city of origin. So, despite this name, the Pharmacopoeia Matritensis was destined to rule, as an official pharmacopoeia throughout the Spanish territory.
