Middelburg, Richard Schilders, 1610. 8vo. With 3 woodcut initials, a woodcut vignette on the title page, and a woodcut head- and tailpiece. Contemporary vellum. [1], [1 blank], [14], 398, [2 blank] pp.
€ 5,000
First edition of this rare flora of Walcheren (Zeeland). Caspar Pelletier (1580-1639) included both common and rare plants, arranged them alphabetically, and listed references and synonymous names by other authors. As a concordance of plant names, the work shows the growing problems of nomenclature in the early 17th century before Caspar Bauhin started to consolidate plant names.
With an early manuscript annotation in ink on the title page, and a bookplate on the front pastedown, from the library of Nordkirchen Castle showing the coat of arms of the Esterhazy-Galantha family. The binding shows some very slight stains. Otherwise in very good condition. Briels, pp. 435-438; BMC NH IV, 1577; Cat. Prov. Bibl. Zeeland II, p. 54; P. de la Rue, Geletterd Zeeland, p. 348-9; Paquot, Mémoires I, p. 113; STCN 830837752; USTC 1026640.
